Amazon Launches Powerful New Hybrid Tablet That Won't Break The Bank

Amazon has long been interested in carving out a space for budget-friendly tablets. Its Fire 7 tablet goes for $60, and the Fire HD 8 goes for $100. These cheaper devices, however, aren't nearly as powerful as the tablets offered by competitors Apple and Google.

Now, Amazon  (AMZN) - Get Free Report is eyeing that competition with the launch of its Fire Max 11 tablet, a device that offers powerful features and size, without compromising on price.

The new tablet -- which is available for pre-order starting May 23 -- is, according to Amazon, the company's "biggest and most powerful tablet yet."

As the name suggests, the tablet has an 11-inch screen and, a first for the Fire Tablet series, is made of aluminum, compared to the plastic that largely makes up Amazon's other tablets.

Amazon said that this design is "three times as durable as the iPad," though it doesn't explain how it got that calculation.

Featuring access to Alexa as well as enhanced cameras and fingerprint recognition technology, the tablet is designed with more than just entertainment in mind. It comes with an attachable keyboard that can easily convert the Fire Max 11 into a two-in-one detachable.

The tablet starts at $229.

Apple's cheapest iPad (the ninth generation model) starts at $329 in the Apple store; the iPad Pro starts at $799. Google's new Pixel Tablet starts at $499.

"The new Fire Max 11 is proof you can get everything you need from a tablet without paying premium prices," Kevin Keith, vice president of Amazon devices said.
