Asia Cup 2023 Points Table: Bangladesh bow out despite ending campaign with victory over India

India suffered their first defeat of the 2023 Asia Cup in their very last Super Four clash, against Bangladesh in Colombo on Friday.

The Men in Blue, who had rested as many as five first-team players for the match, failed to chase down a challenging target of 266 in tricky batting conditions at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium under lights.

This despite Shubman Gill’s brilliant 121 off 133 balls that held the innings together despite a disastrous start and along with Axar Patel’s attacking 42, took the game to the very final over the innings.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan led from the front with an 85-ball 80, stitching a 101-run fifth-wicket stand with middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy, rescuing the Tigers after they had been reduced to 59/4 at one stage. Bangladesh were also propelled in the slog overs by Nasum Ahmed’s near-run-a-ball 44 that helped them go past the 250 mark.

Debutant Tanzim Hasan then shone with the ball, removing India skipper Rohit Sharma and fellow debutant Tilak Varma in a fiery opening spell that pushed the Indians on the back-foot early in the game. Also shining with the ball was senior left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman, who finished with 3/50 including the crucial wickets of Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel in the penultimate over of the match.

Bangladesh, who had already been eliminated from the race to the final following Super Four losses against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, ended their campaign with a narrow six-run win that is also their first against India in the Asia Cup since 2012.

Sri Lanka had defeated Pakistan by two wickets in a last-ball thriller to confirm their place alongside India in the summit clash that takes place at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday. Chasing a revised target of 252 in a rain-affected encounter against Pakistan, wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis’s 91 as well as Sadeera Samarawickrama’s 48 helped lay the foundation early on.

Charith Asalanka later assumed control of the chase and ultimately got his team over the line in thrilling fashion with an unbeaten 49, helping the Lankans reach a second consecutive final.

The tournament returns to the ODI format this year after having taken place in T20 mode in the UAE in 2022, effectively becoming a precursor to the ICC World Cup that takes place from 5 October to 19 November in India.

Asia Cup 2023: All you need to know

The tournament is also the first in Asia Cup history with matches taking place in multiple nations. While Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained the hosting rights for the tournament, quite a few matches including the final had to be moved to Sri Lanka after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan citing political tensions between the two nations.
