Asia Cup 2023 Points Table: India through to final after 41-run win against Sri Lanka
India became the first team to qualify for the Asia Cup 2023 final with a 41-run victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday.
Asia Cup ODI Stats: Past winners, most runs, wickets, biggest win and more
The Men in Blue got off to a spectacular start at the R Premadasa Stadium thanks to Rohit Sharma’s blazing 53. The Men in Blue raced to 80 for no loss at the end of 11 overs before Dunith Wellalage struck, dismissing Shubman Gill.
India would crumble against quality spin from the Sri Lankans thereafter. Wellalage led the way with 5/40 — his maiden five-for — while all-rounder Charith Asalanka continued from where Wellalage left off with outstanding figures of 4/18. Maheesh Theekshana grabbed the final wicket, dismissing Axar Patel, to bowl India out for 213 as all 10 wickets went to Sri Lankan spinners.

Wellalage would later come to Sri Lanka’s rescue with the bat after they were left staring a big defeat at 99/6. The all-rounder stitched a 63-run stand with Dhananjaya de Silva for the seventh wicket that gave Sri Lanka real hope of pulling off an unlikely victory, and remained stranded on 42 while wickets tumbled at the other end as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 172 in reply.
The victory ensured India took their points tally to four, making them the first team to qualify for the final of the ongoing tournament. This will be their third Asia Cup final in four editions.
Sri Lanka, who suffered their first defeat of the campaign after winning three games in a row, face Pakistan in a virtual quarter-final in Colombo on Saturday.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, are out of contention as far as the final is concerned with two defeats in as many Super Four matches. They lock horns with India on Friday and will hope to sign off on a winning note.
The tournament returns to the ODI format this year after having taken place in T20 mode in the UAE in 2022, effectively becoming a precursor to the ICC World Cup that takes place from 5 October to 19 November in India.
Asia Cup 2023: All you need to know
The tournament is also the first in Asia Cup history with matches taking place in multiple nations. While Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained the hosting rights for the tournament, quite a few matches including the final had to be moved to Sri Lanka after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan citing political tensions between the two nations.
