Asian Games 2023: Beyond medals, 48 Olympic quotas at stake

For Indian contingent at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, it is not just the medals on the line in the continental competition. There is also an added boost of earning Olympic quota places for the Paris Games next year. Across nine sports, 74 Olympic quotas are up for grabs with Indians in contention in 48 of them.

The sports include archery, artistic swimming, boxing, hockey, modern pentathlon, sailing, tennis and water polo. With no Indians in contention in breaking, water polo and artistic swimming, the targets are limited to 48 quota places.

Archery

Recurve is the only discipline that is common between Asian Games and Olympics. There will be six quota places available in the event. The finalists in individual men’s and women’s events will take a spot while the gold medallists in the mixed team event will get the other two spots.

Boxing

No other sport has more Olympic quotas for grabs than boxing. As many as 34 quota spots are available at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Women’s boxing discipline has 20 quota places while the men’s event has 14 spots.

In women’s 50kg, 54kg, 57kg and 60kg, spots will be won by all four semi-finalists. In women’s 66kg and 75kg disciplines and men’s 51kg, 57kg, 63kg, 71kg, 80kg, 92kg and +92kg, quota places will go to the finalists.

Hockey

In the men’s and women’s hockey discplines, the gold medal winners will clinch berth for the Olympics.

Tennis

Like hockey, only the gold medal winners in men’s and women’s singles events will book their place at the Paris Summer Olympics.

Modern Pentathlon

In men’s and women’s modern pentathlon event disciplines, five Olympic quotas are available. The top finishers in each event will qualify for the Olympics. From an Indian perspective, Mayank Vaibhav Chaphekar is the only Indian in the discipline.

Sailing

Six sailing events will award Paris Olympic quota places. The champions in the men’s windsurfer iQfoil, men’s kite – formula kite, men’s one-person dinghy ILCA7, women’s windsurfer iQfoil, women’s kite- formula kite and women’s one-person dinghy ILCA6 will be awarded Olympic quotas. India have athletes participating in four of the six Olympic events.

Olympic standards

Besides the above, athletes can also qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics if they meet the qualification standards set by their respective global body. Athletics and swimming are two sports where athletes can seal spots for the Games in France.
