Asian Games 2023: India better 2018 tally to register best-ever medal haul

India achieved their best-ever medal haul at the Asian Games on Wednesday as they went past the tally of 70. India’s previous best medal tally of 70 had come during the Jakarta-Palembang Games in 2018 where they won 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze.

India had finished Day 10 of the 2023 Asian Games with 69 medals and equalled the tally of 70 early in the morning after race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo won a bronze medal in the 35km mixed race walk event.

Archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale followed it up with a gold in the compound mixed team event as India registered their best-ever Asian Games medal haul.

Another bronze came in squash Wednesday as Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh’s journey in the mixed doubles team event ended with a semi-final defeat to Malaysia’s Aifa Binti Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Kamal. The Indian duo lost 11-8, 2-11, 9-11.

“It is with great pleasure that I would like to state that India has forged its impression with the best ever medal haul in the Asian Games by crossing the 70 mark in medals tally and there are more to come,” India’s chef de mission Bhupender Singh Bajwa said.

India have so far won 16 gold, 26 silver and 30 bronze medals with more than four days of competition still to come. They are also set to break their best-ever gold medal tally. With 16 gold, they have matched their previous best which came in 2018.

India have sent their largest-ever contingent of 655 athletes to the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and ‘Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar’ (Let’s go for more than 100 medals this time) is their catch line for the Games.

1951 New Delhi: 51 medals with 15 gold
2010 Guangzhou: 65 medals with 14 gold
