Classic Las Vegas residency returns but something’s missing

Las Vegas hosts a variety of entertainment and performer residencies on and off the 4.2-mile Strip for everyone's taste. For those looking for popular music, there's always at least a handful of stars performing residencies in the various hotel casinos.

Lady Gaga returned to the Strip at Dolby Live at the Park MGM for her Jazz + Piano residency, which continues Sept. 28, 30, Oct. 1, 4 and 5. Carrie Underwood's Reflection residency runs for 14 shows beginning Sept. 22 and continuing for shows in September, November and December at Resorts World.

Katy Perry: Play at Resorts World is coming back for a final 10 shows between Oct. 4 and Nov. 4 to conclude the "Roar" singer's residency.

Cirque du Soleil has six different shows in Sin City

Fascinating stage shows include Cirque du Soleil, which first opened on the Strip at the Mirage in 1992, with six different shows guests can experience. Classic magician David Copperfield also performs his magic act at MGM Resorts International's  (MGM) - Get Free Report MGM Grand.

Penn & Teller began their 30-year run performing their magic and comedy act in Las Vegas at Bally's in 1993, before starting a long-running residency at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in January 2001 at the Penn and Teller Theater. Some speculation indicated that Caesars Entertainment wanted the edgy magical show to move to the Jubilee Theater at Bally's, which is now the Horseshoe, or Paris Theater, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. But Penn & Teller remained loyal to their long-term commitment to the Rio.

The magical duo in July reached an agreement for a three-year extension of its residency at the Rio with the hotel casino's new operating company Dreamscape Inc., which takes over for Caesars Entertainment  (CZR) - Get Free Report Oct. 1. Caesars sold the Rio to Dreamscape in 2019 but continued operating the hotel casino under an agreement.

Penn & Teller extends residency to 2026

The residency extension makes the Rio Penn & Teller's home until 2026.

“We are thrilled to continue the partnership with Penn & Teller,” Dreamscape President of Entertainment and Gaming Trevor Scherrer said in a statement reported by the Review-Journal. “Penn & Teller are icons in entertainment, and their show continues to be a must see for Las Vegas visitors. We are honored to have them as part of the Rio as we reimagine this iconic resort.”

Dreamscape has also raised $850 million to finance a "reimagining" of Rio's two-tower structure, "restoring it into a premiere resort and casino experience with modernized amenities and an array of offerings that speak to today's gaming and hospitality consumer," the company said in a news release. Rio will remain open during the renovation.

Renovations at the Rio will include new curtains and a new set in Penn & Teller Theater. As Dreamscape overhauls the hotel casino property, visitors will begin to see some changes. Among the changes they will notice is the owners have taken down a Penn & Teller giant portrait building wrap that was placed on the hotel casino about a year and a half ago, the Review-Journal said. Hotel wraps have featured the duo in eight different wraps in the last 15 years.

There's no word on if or when a new wrap will appear on the building, though it seems likely that a new portrait will appear on the hotel casino once renovations are completed.
