Comedian Daniel Fernandes Halts Hyderabad Show After BJP MLA T Raja’s Threat

Daniel Fernandes, a popular stand-up comedian, was forced to cancel his upcoming show in Hyderabad that was slated for June 29, a Saturday. This cancellation was a result of threats he received from T Raja, a Member of Legislative Assembly from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Daniel Fernandes voiced his concerns on Instagram by sharing a video. Within this video, he expressed worry over the safety of his team and viewers following threats he’s been receiving, even post his sincere apologies.

In the video, the comedian expressed, “The video that has offended people has been taken down and I have posted an apology earlier. However, we are still receiving calls, messages, and emails threatening us with violence and vandalism. Nobody is ready to guarantee the safety of my audience, my crew and myself, and I do not want to put anybody in harm’s way because of something I said (sic).”

He further added, “It’s okay to disagree with an artist’s work. But to say that I will inflict violence upon an artist because I do not like their work isn’t the answer (sic).”

He continued, “To the members of the Jain community, I will say it again: There was no intention to malign anybody here. I can see that you’re upset and angry, and this genuinely makes me sad (sic).”

The controversy erupted from a viral video showing Fernandes commenting on Jains in Delhi, observing their similar attire to Muslims and their practice of buying goats for Bakri Eid. Subsequently, T Raja’s plea came for Fernandes to take down the video. He placed a serious ultimatum before him; tender an apology and remove the offending video, or face the prospect of his workers causing him physical harm.
