Dad with creative solution for economy travelers is going viral on TikTok

Both travelers and airlines often come up with all kinds of ways to make a long flight in economy more bearable.

A plane full of people once saw a fellow traveler use the blanket one gets for napping to cordon off his seat for some extra "privacy" while Air New Zealand  (ANZFF) - Get Free Report recently launched sleeping pods that let travelers on ultra-long-haul flights pay to sleep in a real bed for a four-hour period.

Last week, another traveler went viral for taking matters into his own hands and sleeping on the floor of the plane without a care of what other travelers thought about him — 41-year-old TikToker Natalie Bright posted a video of her elderly father stretched on the aisle between the plane seats in a plaid button-down shirt and jeans.

'You have ur Airport Dad, I have my Asian Dad'

"You have ur Airport Dad, I have my Asian Dad," Bright wrote in reference to the viral meme of a man who overprepares for a trip to the airport and is overly controlling once the family is there. "Flying economy for 15 hours? No problem."

More Travel:

The 10-second video was viewed nearly 10 million times and received thousands of comments from those who either recognized their own elderly parents in the man's actions or questioned the logistics of stretching out in the aisle.

"Do the flight attendants not say anything?" reads one of the most upvoted comments underneath the video.

"I'd rather lay on the floor than sit 14+ hours on those uncomfortable seats but they never let me," wrote another commenter named Hamza. Follower questions included everything from what would happen in the case of severe turbulence to how flight would walk past the man without stepping on him.

"As a past flight attendant, you don't want to know what I have seen on those carpets," wrote Emily Marsh.

Airlines are finding creative solutions to give passengers more space (but you have to pay for it)

But while Bright's video went viral for its light-hearted nature, the issue of space on planes and in economy class in particular has been on many airlines' radar.

Just this week, Australia's flagship carrier Qantas Airways  (QUBSF) - Get Free Report announced a "Neighbour Free Seating" service in which the airline would offer passengers on less-than-full flights to pay a fee that guarantees a free seat next to them.

The cost is $45 Australian dollars (roughly $28 USD) for flights between Australia and New Zealand, $100 AUD ($63 USD) for flights between Australia and Singapore and $225 ($142 USD) for long-haul flights between Australia and the U.S.

"The data shows it's most popular with customers on our longer flights between the east and west coasts, so rolling it out to our international flights makes a lot of sense," Qantas' Chief Customer And Digital Officer Catriona Larritt said in a statement.

The pilot service is meant to test whether airlines can make money off passengers who want more space but will not pay for two seats while also not losing out on empty seats that on other airlines some are lucky enough to be next to for free.
