ENG vs SL Highlights T20 World Cup: England beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets, qualify for semi-finals

17:19 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

Alright! Half the drama has ended. Group 1 has ended and New Zealand along with England have qualified for the knockouts. A heart-break for the defending champions and hosts, Australia as they have been eliminated after coming quite close. NRR bring the only difference between top three teams in that group. But as Aaron Finch said yesterday, they put themselves in this position.

That's it from Group 1 and Saturday has ended as far as World Cup is concerned. Tomorrow will be a triple header which will end the other half of the drama as well. South Africa will face Netherlands early in the day, followed by Pakistan vs Bangladesh and India vs Zimbabwe. Do not forget to join us tomorrow. Have a good time till then!

England vs Sri Lanka Captain's quotes:

Dasun Shanaka: It was an amazing fight, but we could have done better. I think the wicket played a part in this game, even the English batters struggled in the second half (on poor batting in the second half). The first half was where we had to set the momentum. It was the powerplay where we didn't bowl well, they played well - especially Alex Hales. I think we played good cricket in patches, but we had a few injuries which cost us the tournament. If not, we could have done better. When we go home, we'll have to polish up the areas where we didn't do well. Hasaranga and Theekshana have bowled well throughout, but the other bowlers have struggled, today they bowled well but that is an area we have to improve. Catching has been a problem in this tournament, we need to go back and improve. I must thank the colorful Sri Lankan fans who support us everywhere we go.

Jos Buttler: Didn't enjoy that match, how close it go. We just had to find a way to win that game. These situations are built for him (On Ben Stokes), he can play a lot of roles for us in this T20 setup. They got off to a really good start, and we felt the wicket would play that way since it was a used wicket. But the way Adil Rashid got us back was wonderful. A lot of people look at the end product with him, he doesn't have the wickets but he has been bowling well. Sam keeps growing and growing, he's a key member of this team and he likes to be in these tough moments. I think Alex in that one over really took the game out of Sri Lanka's hands. Excited to go there (Adelaide), we just needed to find a way to win today. Now it is time to go there and think about the semi-finals.

17:05 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

Adil Rashid is the player of the match for his figures of 1/16 from 4 overs.

"I thought Stokes played a magnificent innings. These kind of things happen in T20 cricket. You bowl dot balls, you take wickets, and create pressure, that is T20 cricket for you. I created a few chances, bowled well, but I think it was a great team effort. I think all the bowlers bowled well, Stokes, Wood, everyone. We got some assistance (spin and seam) from this wicket, you don't get such assistance on Australian wickets. I felt quite good, even before the tournament I was feeling good. I did my job, was focused on it, and the rest is history. The pitch might spin, seam, you need to assess the conditions accordingly. We get this kind of support wherever we go, hopefully, they (fans) will come out in numbers in the next match as well.

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

A dramatic match and it only justifies the manner in which this tournament has unfolded right from the start. Ben Stokes was once again at the centre of things and guided England home after a tensed situation out in the middle. Teams chasing had lost all the previous games at the SCG, but England have changed that bit now, chasing 142 with two balls to spare.

England qualify for the semi-finals alongside New Zealand from Group 1 and will face team that finishes first from the other group. Sri Lanka can take a lot of heart from the manner they fought to defend a below par 142. 20 more runs and they would have had a spear through England's heart. But England have ended winning it.

16:53 (IST)

16:44 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

17.6 Sam Curran has succumbed to the pressure and holed one in the deep. A short delivery from Lahiru Kumara, Curran shuffles across to the off side and hooks it towards fine-leg. The ball seemed to be flying over the ropes for once, but it wasn't. A very good catch in the deep by Rajitha to give Sri Lanka some hope. The fans in the stadium are ecstatic! That was an excellent over by Lahiru Kumara. Just two runs from it and a wicket as well. Sam Curran c Kausn Rajitha b Lahiru Kumara 6 (11)

16:26 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

14.3 Moeen Ali is gone! On a good length by DDS and Moeen Ali has given an easy catch - easier than what the fielders would take in practice sessions - to Dasun Shanaka at short extra-cover. England are not having it easily. Moeen Ali c Shanaka b DM de Silva 1 (5)

16:23 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

England need 32 runs in 36 balls. Just 4 runs from that 14th over. Can Sri Lanka pull a rabbit out of the hat here? England will be comfortable with Stokes in the middle.

16:20 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

13.1 Liam Livingstone goes down and that will irk England a bit. That was bowled around god length area by Lahiru Kumara and Livingstone skies it high towards long-on. That went too high and didn't get any distance. Dhananjaya De Silva takes a good catch in the deep. Seemed like he will drop it, but held it to his chest even as he fell down. Are Sri Lanka crawling back now? Liam Livingstone c DM de Silva b Kumara 4 (6)

16:15 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

England need less than run-a-ball. The only way Sri Lanka can come back here is pick more wickets - a flurry of wickets to be specific, as England bat deep.

16:11 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

10.3 England have suddenly lost their third wicket. Dhananjaya De Silva strikes, and the new comer Harry Brooks has been sent back for 4. England have played excellently and also negated the threat Sri Lanka spinners were expected to pose. Hasaranga did manage two wickets, but England have dominated the first 10 overs. Largely on the back of their openers.

England: 86/2 after 10 overs

16:06 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

9.1 Wanindu Hasaranga has Alex Hales now! A soft, soft dismissal. A leading edge that lobs back to Hasaranga. He was trying to play that towards the leg side, but was early on the shot. Has a wry smile on his face, as he walks back. Alex Hales c & b Wanindu Hasaranga 47 (30)

15:49 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

5.5 Alex Hales has survived a scar. There was an appeal for an edge to the wicket-keeper, the Sri Lankans didn't seem convinced, but went for a review out of desperation. The snicko showed a spike as the ball passed the bat, but the bat has hit the ground at the same time! The third umpire does not have any conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision.

England:70/0 after 6 overs

15:46 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

Back-to-back boundaries for Hales after that six.

15:37 (IST)

3.3 Lofts it over the bowler's head and also poses for the cameras. A fullish delivery and Hales has lofted it to perfection.
3.4 Wide on the leg stump and Hales flicks it away fine on the leg side. An easy boundary for Hales that. Wait, that is also a no ball, so a free-hit coming up.

2.3 Buttler gets his first boundary now! A full delivery by Theekshana and Buttler drives it down, past the diving mid-off fielder.

15:28 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

1.4 Alex Hales has the first boundary of the innings. You can't ask him to sit silently for long. He was looking at the field before the ball was bowled. Moves away to the leg side and lofts it over mid-off for four runs.

1.5 Four more for Hales. Slightly shorter and slower delivery, Hales creates room and lifts it over the extra cover. Excellent stuff by Hales, playing with the field setting.

England: 15/0 after 2 overs

15:22 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

A decent over from Theekshana to start the proceedings. Three runs from the over. The last ball had a feather of Alex Hales' bat but Nissanka has put it down.

England: 3/0 after 1 over

15:18 (IST)

England vs Sri Lanka Live Score and Updates:

England openers are out - Jos Buttler will take the strike. Alex Hales at the other end. Maheesh Theekshana to open the bowling for Lankans.

15:16 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

Excellent death bowling from England to restrict Sri Lanka.
First 10 overs: 80/2
Last 10 overs: 61/6

The numbers itself summarise the two-halves of the innings. Sri Lanka started well in powerplay, and continued even after, but England slowly crawled back and completely dried off the boundaries. Adil Rashid was excellent in the middle overs. Sam Curran's slower ones and Mark Wood's extreme pace were too good at the death for Sri Lanka to even connect the bat with the ball. The finishing pair of Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka have disappointed, unable to get anything significant. England need 142 to get into the semi-finals. But there have been no successful run chases at the SCG this World Cup.

15:10 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

19.6 A wicket to end the innings. Mark Wood and England have been serious at the death. Another 154 kmph delivery. Theekshana tries to upper cut it, and does it as well, but finds the fielder at third man. Alex Hales takes a sharp catch covering some distance from his square position. Maheesh Theekshana c Alex Hales b Mark Wood 0 (1)

Sri Lanka: 141/8 after 20 overs

15:07 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

19.5 Wanindu Hasaranga has been run out. And Sri Lanka will fail to reach 150 either. Brilliant comeback by England! Hasaranga misses the 146 kmps delivery, but Chamika calls for a bye. Buttler throws at the striker's end, but misses and the ball lands in Wood's hands who disturbs the stumps at non-striker's end. Wanindu Hasaranga run out (Buttler/Wood) 9 (9)

15:04 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

19.2 152 clicks from Mark Wood, how could Rajapaksa time that pull to perfection over mid-on? But he tries to do that and gets a top edge to the mid-on standing on the ring. Bhanuka Rajapaksa c Sam Curran b mark Wood 22 (22)

15:02 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

19.1 Bhauka Rajapaksa slaps it through the covers, starts the last over with a boundary.

14:59 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

18.5 Four runs to Hasaranga. Nothing wrong from Sam Curran there, bowls a well-directed yorker as Hasaranga shuffles on the off-side. He has flicked it between his two legs at the end and that runs away to fine leg boundary.

Sri Lanka: 136/5 after 19 overs

14:55 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

17.5 A faint edge and skipper Dasun Shanaka is out for three. Mark Wood's pace has troubled the batters. That was 147 kmps, and Shanaka tries to cut the ball, but gets an edge that goes straight to Jos Buttler. Shanaka has failed to play up to his calibre this World Cup. Dasun Shanaka c Jos Buttler b Mark Wood 3 (8)

14:48 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

Brilliant 17th over from Sam Curran. Just three runs of it, against Sri Lanka's finishers in Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa!

Sri Lanka: 123/4 after 17 overs

14:44 (IST)

15.3 Patthum Nissanka departs after a fine innings. Adil Rashid's first wicket at the 2022 T20 World Cup! Nissanka comes down the ground to a short of good length delivery and lofts it over the bowler. Wanted to hit the straight sight screen, but doesn't get any timing on it. Chris Jordan, the sub fielder takes the catch almost 20 yards in from the boundary ropes. Pathum Nissanka c sub (CJ Jordan) b Rashid 67 (45)

Sri Lanka: 121/4 after 16 overs

14:41 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

14.6 Bhanuka Rajapaksa! Short ball, outside off stump and Rajapaksa just guides it over the slip cordon. Just opened the face of the bat as late as he could.

Sri Lanka: 116/3 after 15 overs

14:39 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:
14.4 Woakes pitches up on the off-side and Nissanka has lofted it wide of mid-off towards the deep extra-cover. Excellent stuff by Nissanka.

14:37 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

Dawid Malan is off the field. He probably pulled his hamstring or probably a groin injury, as he tried to chase the ball on the first ball of the 15th over.

14:35 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

Stuart Broad with an important question!

14:32 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

12.5 Rajapaksa gets his first boundary. And that's 100 for Sri Lanka. Stokes bowls short and wide outside the off stump. Rajapaksa cuts it over the backward point fielder and the ball rides over the boundary line after a couple of bounces. Interesting to see Rajapaksa's approach from here on.

Sri Lanka: 100/3 after 13 overs

14:29 (IST)

Sri Lanka vs England Live Score and Updates:

12.2 Patthum Nissanka takes on Ben Stokes and has got a maximum! Pitched around middle and leg, Nissanka slogs it on the leg side, and that has gone between the square leg and deep mid-wicket to hit the advertisement board for six runs.

The T20 World Cup has been a roller coaster ride. It started with a strange upset wherein Namibia defeated Sri Lanka. And as we come to the business end – the last match of Group 1, Sri Lanka have a chance to create an upset against England at the SCG. Though, the upset will not be as strange as in the tournament opener.

Sri Lanka are themselves eliminated after both Australia and New Zealand won yesterday. However, they have the pride to play for, and more importantly, for the hosts Australia.

The Asian Champions have a chance to do a favour to the defending champions. But it will be an uphill task against the giants and one of the tournament favourites England.

England, on paper, seem to have all bases covered. While they were not so clinical against New Zealand, their win against the Kiwis shall boost their confidence.

Sri Lanka will also be on the positive side after beating Afghanistan in their last match, and hopefully, the elimination will not play on their mind.

Sri Lanka’s head coach Chris Silverwood, who was England’s coach till recently, will have a serious opportunity for redemption of his removal from that position. He has been undoubtedly influential in Sri Lanka’s T20 development and the Asia Cup win in September.

It will be a cracking contest. England will be under pressure to stay alive in this tournament, whereas Sri Lanka will have nothing to lose and play as fearlessly as they can and put their best game to display.
