Gautam Gambhir To Become India’s Next Head Coach? KKR’s IPL-Winning Mentor Finally Breaks Silence – WATCH

New Delhi: Favourite to succeed Rahul Dravid as the next head coach of the Indian senior men’s cricket team, Gautam Gambhir finally broke his silence as he stated he would love to take up the top job and there is no bigger honour than that. Gambhir, who recently mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to their third Indian Premier League title last month, has been grabbing all the headlines since reports came in that the BCCI approached the former India opener for the role.

The development got fueled when Gambhir was caught having a brief chat with BCCI secretary Jay Shah after KKR won IPL 2024 in Chennai. With Shah stating BCCI didn’t approach any foreign coaches (Australians in particular), Gambhir became the talking point considering his record in IPL as a mentor.

However, during an promotional event in Abu Dhabi, Gambhir couldn’t hold back when a young sports enthusiast asked the two time World Cup-winner about coaching the Indian team. “I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team,” he said with a smile on his face.

“You are representing 140 crore Indians and more across the globe as well and when you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?” added the former left-hander. The BCCI had advertised for the position of India’s next head coach on May 13 and the deadline ended May 27. However, it is still not sure whether Gambhir had applied or not.

In case, Gambhir accepts the India job, he will have to leave KKR after just one season as a mentor. The last time India had won an ICC trophy was in 2013 when the Men in Blue won the Champions Trophy in England. Asked about when India would win a World Cup, Gambhir was spot on.

“It is not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless,” he added.

led by Rohit Sharma, India finished runners-up in ODI World Cup at home last year. Currently, they are in West Indies and USA, competing at the T20 World Cup.
