India vs Pakistan, Asia Cup 2023: What happens if the game gets washed out on reserve day?

India and Pakistan will continue their second clash in the Asia Cup on Monday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Their first clash, in the group stage, was washed out in Pallekele. Despite this, both teams sneaked into the Super 4s with victories over Nepal, who were the third team in the group.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the other two teams in the Super 4s where each team plays against the other once with the top two reaching the final.

Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in their Super Four opener and Sri Lanka also registered a victory over the Tigers, who are now at the bottom of the points table. Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka have two points each with Men in Green leading due to a superior net run rate.

India start their Super 4 campaign against Pakistan and will hope for a full two points. However, weather could have a say in that.

As expected, rain arrived at 5 PM in Colombo and didn’t allow any play from thereon. Up until then, India had progressed to 147/2 with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli occupying the crease. Earlier, skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had stitched a 121-run stand.

What happens if the match gets washed out?

India vs Pakistan is the only Super 4s match in the Asia Cup 2023 to have a reserve day. There has been a lot of controversy around the decision but it has been followed through. The match on Monday would pick up from where the teams left things on Sunday.

Monday weather

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for Monday is also not conducive for cricket. As per weather.com, there’s 35% chance of rain at the time of scheduled 3 PM start with prediction of scattered thunderstorms. The prediction for rain relents to 20-25% around 6.30 PM local time. But it picks up once again as the evening progresses.

Pakistan already have two points and will move to three if the game gets washed out, while India will get one point.

In such a scenario both Pakistan and India will only be able to reach a maximum of five points from three matches while Sri Lanka will can accumulate six points.

For that, Sri Lanka will need to beat both India and Pakistan which means despite a possible washout in the India vs Pakistan game, both teams will still have a good chance of making the final.

Bangladesh, however, are on the brink of elimination after two defeats in the Super 4s.
