IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange and Purple Cap list: LSG joins GT, CSK in playoffs after thrilling win over KKR

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) became the third team after defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to qualify for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by one run in a last-ball thriller in Kolkata on Saturday.

Lucknow recovered from a shaky start and were propelled towards a competitive score of 176/8 by a 30-ball 58 from Nicholas Pooran after being invited to bat. Kolkata, in response, lost their way in the middle overs after getting off to a fiery start, and were staring at a big defeat when Rinku Singh decided to launch an all-out assault in the last two overs of the Kolkata chase.

Rinku remained unbeaten on 67 off 33 balls, posting his highest-ever score in the IPL, though it ultimately was not enough to get his team over the line as KKR bowed out of the competition with a narrow one-run loss at home.

Earlier in the day, CSK sealed their place in the playoffs by hammering Delhi Capitals by 77 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi in the afternoon clash of the Saturday double-header. Chennai posted a humongous 223/3, with openers Ruturaj Gaikwad (79) and Devon Conway (87) leading the way. Delhi skipper David Warner then played a lone hand, scoring 86 off 58 balls as Delhi could manage just 146/9 in reply.

Given the margin of Chennai’s victory, Lucknow needed to defeat Kolkata by 97 runs or more for them to eclipse CSK’s Net Run Rate and move to the second spot. Since Kolkata fought hard and took the game to the very last over, Lucknow had to settle for the third spot.

As of now, three teams are still in contention for the fourth playoff spot with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) sitting on 14 points each. RCB and MI will be in action in the Sunday double-header, facing GT and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.
