IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange and Purple Cap list: MI jump to seventh after beating RR in high-scoring thriller

Mumbai Indians (MI) collected a much-needed victory over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Mumbai on Sunday to keep their hopes of making the IPL 2023 playoffs alive.

In a high-scoring contest at the Wankhede Stadium, which also happened to be the 1000th match in the Indian Premier League, MI rode on valuable contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (55), Tim David (45 not out) and Cameron Green (44) to chase down the daunting 213-run target set by RR.

Earlier in the game, opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal lit up the Wankhede by smashing a 62-ball 124 — the highest score of the season so far — bringing up his maiden IPL hundred in just 53 deliveries. The innings, however, ultimately went in vain.

Mumbai were tied on eight points with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the victory, though Bangalore are ranked higher at sixth due to their better Net Run Rate. Rajasthan, meanwhile, slipped to the third spot with their NRR falling below Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) +0.841.

Earlier on Sunday, Punjab Kings overcame a scare to beat Chennai Super Kings by five wickets, the victory helping them climb a spot to fifth in the IPL points table.

CSK had won the toss and opted to bat. An unbeaten 92 from Devon Conway led them to 200/4 from 20 overs. In reply, Liam Livingstone (40) and Prabhsimran Singh (42) were also among the runs, while Sikandar Raza’s cameo (13 off 7) helped PBKS chase down the target in the stipulated 20 overs.

Despite the defeat, Chennai continue to sit above Punjab at the fourth spot — though both teams are tied on 10 points along with Lucknow and Rajasthan, CSK’s NRR is better than that of PBKS.

Gujarat Titans (GT) currently occupy top spot with 12 points from eight matches. Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, remain at the bottom with just four points from eight matches.

Here’s a look at the updated IPL 2023 points table after KKR vs GT:

List of Orange Cap and Purple Cap holders

RR opener Yashasvi Jaiswal rose to the top of the Orange Cap list after smashing a 62-ball 124 — the highest score of the season so far — against MI at the Wankhede Stadium, taking his tally to 428 runs. Sitting at the second position is RCB’s Faf du Plessis with 422 runs while CSK opener Devon Conway, who struck an unbeaten 92 in a losing cause against PBKS, sits at third with 414 runs.

The Purple Cap, meanwhile, changed heads in the same game. While PBKS’s Arshdeep Singh (15) took it from RCB’s Mohammed Siraj (14) by dismissing Shivam Dube in the match against CSK, Chennai’s Tushar Deshpande later gained possession of the same and pushed Siraj to the third spot with a haul of 3/45 that took his season tally to 17.

Orange Cap holder: Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR) – 428 runs

Purple Cap holder: Tushar Deshpande (CSK) – 17 wickets
