Palakkad: Onam celebrations turned fatal for a 49-year-old man as he died after choking on idlis someday of an eating contest at Walayar near Palakkad on Saturday, 14 September 2024.

The idli eating contest changed into held as element of Onam celebrations, police said.

The competition changed into organised by a native club, they said.

“The deceased, Suresh, choked on the idlis while collaborating in the competition and the onlookers tried to avoid wasting him and by some means took out the idli,” police said.

Alternatively, he died soon after he changed into taken to a nearby sanatorium, police added.

Meanwhile, in response to Chullimada ward member Minmini R, Suresh tried to gobble down three idlis together when he showed signs of distress. He changed into without delay rushed to a nearby private sanatorium, from where he changed into shifted to a couple of other sanatorium at Walayar, where he changed into declared dead. The body is being kept on the sanatorium for post-mortem, reports www.onmanorama.com.

Onam is an annual harvest and cultural festival celebrated by the people of Kerala.

This year, Onam might be celebrated from 6 September to fifteen September, with the main Onam day, Thiruvonam, falling on Sunday, 15 September.
