Mexico slams US spending on Ukraine war

On Monday, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the president of Mexico, called U.S. military spending in Ukraine “irrational,” intensifying his condemnation of the war effort while pleading with Washington to invest more money in assisting Latin American nations.

In order to reduce the pressures caused by migration, Lopez Obrador has long urged the United States to invest more money in aiding economic growth in Central America and the Caribbean.

During his routine daily press conference, Lopez Obrador criticised the U.S. Congress for failing to release funds for the area and then brought up the controversy over a stopgap financing package last week that excluded more aid for Ukraine.

“I was just looking at how now they’re not authorizing aid for the war in Ukraine,” he said. “But how much have they destined for the Ukraine war? $30-50 billion for the war. Which is the most irrational thing you can have. And damaging.”

The leftist Lopez Obrador has opposed western military assistance to Kiev and vowed to keep Mexico neutral in the conflict. In order to put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, he has also suggested holding peace talks.

Two weeks ago, in response to harsh criticism that his nation had provided a platform to forces who invaded Ukraine, the president defended the participation of a Russian military contingent in a weekend parade commemorating Mexico’s independence day.

However, three significant U.N. resolutions denouncing Russia’s involvement in the crisis have received support from his government.
