After days of suspense, the BJP on Monday named Mohan Yadav, three-term MLA from Ujjain South, as the new Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Rajendra Shukla and Jagdish Deora are set to take over as the new deputy CMs, the party announced.

The party also named Narendra Singh Tomar as the Speaker of Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

Yadav (58), an OBC leader, was elected as the BJP’s legislature party leader in Madhya Pradesh at a meeting in Bhopal held in the evening in presence of central observers, sources said.

He was serving as minister for higher education in the outgoing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s cabinet.

“I am a small worker of the party. I thank all of you, the state leadership and the central leadership. With your love and support, I will try to fulfil my responsibilities,” said Madhya Pradesh CM-designate Yadav.

Madhya Pradesh BJP president VD Sharma said that senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan proposed the name of Mohan Yadav as the new leader of the Madhya Pradesh legislative party.

“Narendra Singh Tomar, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Prahlad Patel and other senior leaders supported the proposal…,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan tendered his resignation to Governor Mangubhai C. Patel at Raj Bhavan in Bhopal after party leader Mohan Yadav was elected as the new Chief Minister.

The new chief minister was named shortly after three central observers of the BJP, including Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, met newly-elected party MLAs in Bhopal.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retained power in MP following the 17  November polls, winning 163 seats in the 230-member Assembly, leaving the Congress a distant second with 66 seats.

The saffron party’s central observers – Khattar, OBC Morcha head K Laxman and secretary Asha Lakra – reached state capital Bhopal by a special plane at around 11.30 am.

State party chief VD Sharma and other leaders welcomed them at the Bhopal airport.

From the airport, the three observers headed to the chief minister’s residence to meet CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

The BJP is going to form government for the fifth time in Madhya Pradesh in two decades. It earlier came to power in the state in 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2020.
