'Necessary steps are being taken': Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviews security situation in J&K

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that each of our soldier is important to us and assured the country that required steps were being taken in the wake of recent terrorist ambush in the border district of Poonch that left four soldiers dead and a few injured.

“I would pray for the speedy recovery of the army personnel who sustained injuries. I would like to assure you that keeping in mind the severity of the incident, required steps are being taken. Each of our army personnel is important to us,” said the Defence Minister.

Singh landed in Jammu earlier in the day and headed to Rajouri-Poonch sector to review ongoing counter-terrorist operations in Rajouri-Poonch sector.

He said that every soldier is  a family member to us and every Indian feels this way.

“It is not tolerable to us if anyone casts an evil eye on you. Security and intelligence agencies play a crucial role in stopping such attacks. Whatever support is needed to step up surveillance will be provided by the government. The doors to our treasury are fully open,” he added.

The Defence Minister said that such attacks should not be taken for granted and more alertness is required to stop such acts of terror.

“I know you all are alert, but I think more alertness is required. Your bravery makes us proud. Your sacrifice, your efforts have no parallel. And they are priceless. When a soldier dies a martyr, even if we pay some compensation, it cannot compensate for the loss. I want to assure you that the government is with you and your welfare and security are high on our priority list,” he said.

The Defence Minister’s visit comes at a time when a Brigadier-level officer faces a probe for recurring lapses in Army operations that have led to several soldiers’ deaths.

It also comes amid outrage in Jammu and Kashmir over the deaths of three civilians in Poonch sector after the Army detained them for questioning.

Singh told soldiers that they should not “make any mistake” that hurts an Indian.

“You are the country’s protectors. But I want to request you that besides ensuring the country’s security, you also have the responsibility to win the hearts of the people. There should be no mistake that hurts an Indian,” he said.

Singh is likely to meet local residents and families of the dead civilians. Around 3 pm, he is expected to chair a high-level security meeting at Raj Bhavan in Jammu.
