After being restored to the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Raghav Chadha rejected the Post Office Bill, 2023 in his first speech.

The Bill does not outline the procedures for authorising such interception, he continued, and the justifications for opening and intercepting correspondence are "vague."

The bill, which was drafted in conjunction with the Bar Council of India, would integrate the provisions of section 36 of the Legal Practitioners Act (1879) into the Advocates Act (1961), so repealing the Legal Practitioners Act (1879). This would also assist in regulating the legal profession through the Advocates Act of 1961, a single Act.

Congress meet to chalk out strategy for Parliament winter session

To plan the course of action for the upcoming winter session of Parliament, the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group will convene at Sonia Gandhi's home at 5:00 p.m. today.

The opposition leaders’ protests against the BJP government over the “cash-for-query” affair and the Ethics Committee’s demand that TMC MP Mahua Moitra be expelled in connection with the incident set the tone for a turbulent start to Parliament’s winter session. The BJP, known for its aggressive tactics, was hoping to corner the Congress-led Opposition on the floor of both Houses following their recent three-pronged success in the state elections.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill 2023, which aim to amend the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860, Indian Evidence Act, 1872, and Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, are among the important bills that are anticipated to be discussed during the session, aside from Moitra’s demand for her expulsion. One of the other legislation aims to control the appointments of other election commissioners and the Chief Election Commission.

In addition, the Narendra Modi administration has proposed two additional measures for the forthcoming winter session of Parliament that will increase the reservation for women in legislative bodies to include legislatures in Jammu & Kashmir and Puducherry.

The government may essentially pass legislation during the winter session, which ends on December 22. The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 would take place over the course of 15 sittings.
