Supreme Court Asks Delhi Govt About Measures Taken To Take Control Of Water Wastage

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing water crisis in the national capital, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi Government about the necessary action it has taken against the so-called “tanker mafia”. The apex court also warned it would direct the Delhi Police to take action if the AAP-led Delhi Government is unable to handle the situation and the tanker mafia. The vacation bench headed by Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B V adjourned the hearing for Thursday, June 13.

The top court said, “People are suffering, we are seeing visuals on every news channel.” The Supreme Court also direct the AAP government to file an affidavit stating measure it has taken to control the water wastage.
“What measures have you taken to control water wastage if water scarcity is a recurring problem in summers?,” the court asked the Delhi Government.

The Top Court also accused the AAP government of making false claims. “Why were false statements made before this court? Water is coming from Himachal Pradesh then where is the water going in Delhi? There is so much spillage, tanker mafias etc.. what measures have you taken in this regard,” the court said.

Earlier today, Atishi, Delhi’s Water Minister, penned a letter to the Chief Secretary. The message? Ensure that authorities carefully supervise and examine the city’s water distribution network, right from the sources to the treatment facilities. Moreover, oversight should continue from these facilities right up to the primary Underground Reservoirs (UGRs).

In these challenging times of water shortage, the assigned teams are going to scrutinize the principal pipelines ensuring no water leakage. If any leaks are detected, it’s paramount they are repaired within just half a day to avert any unnecessary water loss.

Atishi has reached out to Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, in light of the urgent situation at hand. Saxena stated that he’d broached the topic of releasing water with the Haryana government, who pledged their full support and assistance. With the mercury soaring for an extended period, Delhi’s water supply is at a critical stage, forcing residents across the city to depend on water tankers for their daily water consumption.
