Threads could make a major comeback now that it's coming to mobile

In early July, Meta Platforms  (META) - Get Free Report CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a swing at X, formerly known as Twitter, launching Instagram's own thread-based conversation platform called, aptly, Threads. The Threads app was very well received -- some even claimed that it gave them the same nostalgic feeling they had in the early days of forum posting on the internet. 

Of course, the fledgling social media app was missing plenty of features that make Twitter easy and convenient. Threads, unlike its competitor, wasn't fully available on a web browser. Users could post to Threads via the mobile app, but on a browser, Threads is read-only.

But in a chat with the Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with the matter say that a functional browser version of the app could be released as soon as this week.

Increased functionality could help the app, which has fallen drastically in popularity since it premiered. The app's initial launch saw it add 100 million enthusiastic users in the first week, and everyone online was talking about it. But the hot topic soon cooled off, and the number of daily active users on Threads dropped 80%. 

Still, Threads is closing the gap between its capabilities and those of its competitor, Elon Musk's X. Threads recently allowed for chronological timeline features and search functions. Zuckerberg and the team at Meta have yet to announce any functions that will allow advertisers and influencers to monetize their content.
