New Delhi: Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer opined Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should open the innings for India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 that is set to take place in USA and West Indies next month. Considering Kohli’s recent form in IPL 2024, where he won the Orange Cap, several experts have expressed their opinion on the possibility of the right-hander opening the innings at the upcoming marquee event.

Jaffer’s comments come in as he believed that captain Rohit Sharma is a better player of spin. “Kohli & Jaiswal should open in the World Cup IMO (in my opinion). Rohit and SKY should bat at 3 and 4 depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin really well so batting at 4 shouldn’t be a concern,” Jaffer said.

The Indian captain boasts a good run while batting at No.3. In 12 T20Is that Rohit played at first down, the right-hander amassed 315 runs at an average of 39.37 and smashed four half-centuries. Rohit’s highest score of 79 not out came while batting at No.3 in the 2010 T20 World Cup against Australia.

For Kohli, the former skipper has got immense success as an opener in international cricket. Kohli too has a good record while opening the batting in the shortest format. He scored 400 runs from nine games as an opener at an amazing average of 57.14 with a top score of 122 not out against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022.

On the other hand, Jaiswal too scored a T20I hundred under while opening the batting against Nepal in the Asian Games 2023. The Indian team will play against Bangladesh in their only warm-up game on June 1 at the newly built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

The Men in Blue will start their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland on June 5 before facing arch-rivals Pakistan four days later.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Hardik Pandya (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.
