Heatwave alerts have been sounded in few states in India. The mercury is on a steep rise in Delhi-NCR with the temperature rising to 45 degree Celsius. Heatwave can be fatal in some cases, hence people should be more careful about keeping their body hydrated all the time. Amid this scorching heat, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration become very common. Another common yet unheard of health issue is an eye stroke. What is eye stroke? When the blood flow to the retina is hampered, it can lead to blurry vision, pain in the eye etc causing an eye stroke that can be very dangerous if not treated timely.

The arteries are responsible for carrying the blood to the retinas. When retinas do not get enough blood and oxygen, a thin tissue layer may start to diminish when it becomes a prolonged practice. Blockage of retinal veins may lead to leakage of fluids into the retina that blocks oxygen flow affecting to the vision. Retina is the part that receives light signals and helps us see the world.

EYE STROKE: SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS

Tell-tale signs of an eye stroke may start to appear to over a few hours or days. Sometimes, they might catch you off the guard and come on suddenly.

  • Blurry Vision: One of the first signs of eye stroke is reduced vision. There could be a sudden or gradual reduction of vision field.
  • Floater: Do you see small grey or spots  floating in your vision field that drift away with vision. These are called floaters and can be potentially be another sign of eye stroke combined with other symptoms.
  • Vision Loss: Due to blockage of blood and oxygen, the retina gets affected that further impacts the vision. It can be a gradual loss of vision or a sudden one as well.
  • Pain or pressure: The reduce blood an oxygen flow can lead to pain and pressure on the eyes.
  • Bleeding: The retina may appear to have red or have blood spots throughout.

The extent of the damage depends on how long the blood flow blockage lasts. The longer the interruption of blood flow, the greater the damage and the more severe the symptoms will be.

People with glaucoma, diabetes, or who have certain comorbidities are more at risk of getting an eye stroke.

  • Keep your eyes moisturised.
  • Add nutrient-rich foods in your diet.
  • Do eye exercises to strengthen eye muscles.
  • Maintain proper eye hygiene
