The class of 2024 at Vermont University features a remarkable addition to their lineup of graduates: Max, an exceptional 6-year-old cat. Max became the first cat to earn a doctorate degree, specializing in the delightfully punny field of “Litter-ature and is away from the ordinary feline.
Max has now become ubiquitous on the Castleton campus of Vermont State University. His well-known presence on the varsity became known after his owner, Ashley Dow, began allowing him to roam freely from their nearby home.
The esteemed dean of admissions Maurice Ouimet has portrayed Max as “exceedingly affectionate” and frequently the first to greet him each morning. Max’s daily routine hovers around engaging with students, scaling backpacks, and striking poses for selfies.
Super impressed by Max’s magnetic charm, Ouimet highlighted noted his effortless ability to attract others. The notion to honor Max as an honorary member of the Class of 2024, bestowing upon him a doctorate in “Litter-ature,” originated from the school’s social media maestro, Rob Franklin.
While the university doesn’t actually grant doctorates to animals, Max’s honorary title – doctorate in “Litter-ature” – acknowledges the real support and joy he brings to the campus community.
According to India Times report, when Vermont State University contacted Dow regarding the degree, she was both astonished by the unexpected twist of fate. Initially, it came as a matter of disbelief to the people in his circle. A coworker even considered her a bit “crazy” for sharing the news, until Max’s appearances on the news validated this extraordinary achievement.
