Netherlands, thus, defeated South Africa for a second time in as many meetings in ICC events, having landed the knockout punch on the Proteas in last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia as well.

Captain Scott Edwards led the way for the Dutchmen with a brilliant 78 not out off 69 deliveries, helping his team post a competitive 245/8 in a rain-curtailed match that was reduced to 43 overs a side after they were reduced to 112/6 after 27 overs.

All-rounder Logan van Beek was the pick of the Dutch bowlers with figures of 3/60 as South Africa, who began the tournament with dominant wins against former champions Sri Lanka and Australia, were bowled out for 207 in reply.

The victory was the World Cup’s second major shock in three days after Afghanistan defeated defending champions England on Sunday.

“When we came into the tournament we wanted to have a chance at playing semi-finals and if you want to do that you’ve got to beat teams,” said Edwards.

“Obviously South Africa are probably one of the favourites the way they are playing so it is a big win for us.”
