The Australian cricket team shattered the hopes of millions of Indians as they clinched the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 when they beat India in the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Captain Pat Cummins achieved the distinction of joining an exclusive group of Australian captains who have lifted the World Cup. This was their unprecedented sixth title. However, upon returning home from their triumph, the 30-year-old received a rather muted response, an emotion that did not resonate with a whole host of Indian and sub-continent users on social media.

A video shared on X depicts a subdued response to the arrival of the Australian captain at the airport. Cummins could be seen carrying his own bags on a trolley, and his photo was captured by a few photographers, and a man shook his hand.

“Every half an hour or so, you kind of remember that we just won the World Cup and get excited all over again,” Cummins told reporters at the airport in Sydney.

“So we’re still buzzing, it’s been an awesome couple of days and I think we’ll be smiling for a fair while. “I think they have created their own legacy,” Cummins added.

“I mean, a World Cup, you only get one chance every four years and especially playing someone like India, it’s hard. “So to be put up against the rest of the world and come away with a medal, that’s — it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Cummins added the squad had never doubted themselves, even after losing two matches at the beginning of the tournament.

“You look back on now that we’ve won and you think: ‘Wow, everything came together,'” he added. “But the belief never left, even at the start. We knew we hadn’t played our best but kind of knew once we clicked we could take on anyone and it proved to be the case.”

Earlier, Pat Cummins described winning the World Cup as the “ultimate achievement in international cricket.” A dominant bowling performance limited India to 240 runs, and Travis Head’s outstanding century powered Australia to chase down the target in 43 overs.

“This is monumental; I believe it’s the pinnacle of international cricket, winning a one-day World Cup, especially here in India, in front of a crowd like this. It’s massive. It has been a significant year for everyone, and our cricket team has been through India, the Ashes, the World Test Championship, and to culminate with this is simply monumental,” Cummins said during the post-match press conference.
