WPL 2024: Tournament to be held in a single state, says BCCI secretary Jay Shah

The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2024 could be held in a single state rather than multiple states, Jay Shah said on Saturday.

“The tournament will start in February, and in terms of the venues, we will hold it in one state. For us, logistics is very important for us this time around. Next time, we will figure it out,” Shah told reporters following the WPL auction in Mumbai on Saturday.

It was earlier reported that the BCCI were looking at multiple cities for the WPL next season, but Shah did not give a clear sign of where the tournament could be held.

“We have Bengaluru, Uttar Pradesh. There are so many places where we can host matches. In Gujarat also, we can do it in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and in Vadodara after a few years,” he added.

Maharashtra remains a favourite to host WPL 2024 matches with three venues across Mumbai and one in Pune, but Shah said that a final call on this would be taken only after consultation with the franchises.

“This is basically a joint call between the franchise and the BCCI. We will sit together and decide…”, Shah said.

“This time, the WPL will be even more successful. The way two uncapped Indian players earned big, it shows how the franchises have gone for Indian players…”, Shah added, referring to Kashvee Gautam and Vrinda Dinesh, who were acquired by Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz respectively.

According to Shah, the IPL could begin in the final week of March and end in late May.
