Yashasvi Jaiswal retires hurt after scoring century in third India vs England Test as hosts dealt with fresh injury blow

Soon after scoring his second century of the ongoing series against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal retired hurt after the 22-year-old seemed to have sustained a back injury. Jaiswal retired hurt on 104 from 133 deliveries, 11 balls after scoring his third Test century. In the 43rd over of India’s second innings, Jaiswal had complained of pain in his lower back and as a result the physio walked out to the middle to take a look at the youngster. Moments later, Jaiswal looked somewhat okay to continue, but at the end of the 44th over, Jaiswal returned to the dressing room after retiring hurt.

Jaiswal’s injury adds a fresh blow to an already-depleted Indian team. KL Rahul has been out with a quadriceps injury whereas Shreyas Iyer has been dropped following a poor run of form. Virat Kohli, meanwhile, will miss the remainder of the Test series due to personal reasons. Ravichandran Ashwin also left the camp midway through the third Test due to a family emergency.

However, Jaiswal can still come out to bat on Day four should he be deemed fit, as per Law 25.4.2 of the MCC.

“If a batter retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his/her innings,” the rule states.

Jaiswal was involved in a 155-run partnership with Shubman Gill for the second wicket. At stumps on Day three, India were 196/2 in the second innings, leading by 322 runs. Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 65 with nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav not out on 3 at the other end. The five-match series is level at 1-1 after two Tests.
