‘You too should reconnect with Hinduism’: US Hindu organisation appeals to JD Vance, his response…

New Delhi: Following US Vice President J.D. Vance’s statement on interfaith marriage, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has appealed to him to reconnect with Hinduism. Vance had said that his wife, Usha, who grew up in a Hindu family, inspired him to reconnect with Christianity. He expressed hope that Usha would also convert to Christianity one day.

What did HAF say?

HAF stated on Friday, October 31, “Mr. Vice President, if your wife has reconnected you with your religion, you should also reconnect with Hinduism. Hinduism does not require that your spouse view things the same way you do regarding religion.”

The organisation said that as a public figure and Vice President, J.D. Vance should recognise the right of Hindus to practice their religion.

The Hindu American Foundation also criticised some of J.D. Vance’s supporters for speaking out against religious freedom. The organisation said, “Some of the most vocal voices among your supporters genuinely do not believe that religious freedom, one of the fundamental concepts at the founding of this nation, should extend to Hindus.”

The Turning Point USA event

The controversy began at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event held at the University of Mississippi on October 29, where a South Asian woman questioned J.D. Vance about his views on interfaith marriage and immigration policy. In response, Vance said, “I hope Usha, who grew up in a Hindu family, draws the same inspiration from the church that I did. But if not, God has given everyone free will.”

Facing criticism for his comments on interfaith marriage, US Vice President JD Vance issued a clarification on Friday. He said, “Usha is not a Christian and doesn’t plan to become one. But in interfaith relationships, I hope she thinks like me. Nevertheless, I will continue to love and support her.” The HAF described it as a symbol of Hinduism’s generosity that Vance’s wife, Usha, helps him stay connected to his faith.
