5 Army Personnel Feared Dead After River Overflows During Tank Exercise In Ladakh’s Daulat Beg Oldie Area

Five soldiers of the Army are feared drowned after they were swept away while crossing a river in a T-72 tank near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Nyoma-Chushul area in Ladakh.

Five soldiers have been killed after their tank was swept away during a river-crossing exercise near the Line of Actual Control in Leh’s Daulat Beg Oldie area in the early hours of Saturday. According to officials, adding All five bodies have been recovered. A Junior Commissioned Officer, or JCO, is among the five killed in the accident that happened around 1 am when their T-72 tank met with an accident near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at Mandir Morh. Reportedly, the soldiers were on a training mission when suddenly the water levels began to rise. Soon the tank and the soldiers were submerged in the swelling river.

“Five Indian Army soldiers, including one junior commissioned officer (JCO) and four jawans, lost their lives in a mishap during a river crossing exercise last evening in Daulat Beg Oldie area. All five bodies have been recovered,” Defence officials said.

Parts of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh have been receiving heavy rainfall in the past couple of days. On Friday, landslides were reported in Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur districts.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Condoles

Taking to X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate accident while getting the tank across a river in Ladakh. We will never forget exemplary service of our gallant soldiers to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firm with them during this hour of grief.
