Asian Games 2023 Medal Tally: India clinch five medals on Day 13 as tally reaches to 91

China have once again maintained their dominance at the Asian Games and more so as hosts in Hangzhou. The country set off to double digits in less than 24 hours since the medal events began and have more medals than the next two countries. Japan and South Korea have occupied the second and third places interchangeably but there has been a massive gulf between China and the rest.

India have won 93 medals so far including 21 golds, 33 silvers and 39 bronzes to occupy fourth place in the standings. Shooting trio of Mehuli Ghosh, Ramita Jindal and Ashi Chouksey had opened India’s account with a silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event on Sunday (24 September).

The latest medals, on Friday (6 October), have come in archery (recurve men’s and women’s teams), sepaktakraw, badminton and wrestling.

This is India’s biggest medal haul at any Asian Games — going past the previous best of 70 medals at 2018 Games in Indonesia.

The 19th edition of the Asian Games officially got underway in the south-eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou with a glittering opening ceremony at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Chinese president Xi Jinping was among those present at the 80,000-seat venue and it was he who declared the Games open on Saturday in a ceremony that had plenty of lights and sound but went with eco-friendly options instead of firecrackers. The organisers decided to introduce concepts such as 3D fireworks and a digital torchbearer.

The Hangzhou Asian Games were originally supposed to take place in 2022, but got delayed by a year due to the COVID pandemic.
