Australia issues over 800 visas for Palestinians fleeing the warzone

The Australian Government has issued hundreds of temporary visas to Palestinians amid ongoing Israeli bombardment on Gaza.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong however have read the situation as ‘still very difficult’ for Gazans.

According to reports, as many as 860 visas have been approved between October 7 and November 20. However, only 67 people, including Australians and their families, have successfully crossed into Egypt via the Rafah border.

Wong appreciated assistance from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt in facilitating these crossings.

Opposition immigration spokesman Dan Tehan criticised the lack of transparency regarding the visa scheme, urging the government to provide details on the process, basis for approval, and security checks. To this, Minister Wong reassures that visa recipients undergo standard security checks by Australian authorities.

The conflict stems from Israel’s response to Hamas actions on October 7, leading to a recent agreement for a four-day humanitarian pause. Qatar announces the release of 50 hostages in Gaza in exchange for Palestinians detained in Israel.

Wong considers the ceasefire a crucial step and emphasizes Australia’s consistent call for the release of hostages, humanitarian access, and protection of civilian lives.

When asked about a sustainable ceasefire, Wong expresses the desire for one, stressing the need for balanced steps. She acknowledges progress with the recent agreement but remains deeply concerned about civilian casualties and condemns Hamas’s actions.
