'Avoid non-essential travel': India issues advisory for nationals in Myanmar amid escalating tensions

Amid increasing tensions between anti-junta groups and government forces in Myanmar, India issued an advisory on Tuesday, urging its citizens to refrain from undertaking non-essential travel to the neighboring country.

Additionally, Indians residing in Myanmar were advised to register with the Indian embassy in Yangon.

Given the ongoing conflict in Myanmar since 2021, a large number of its citizens have sought refuge in India. The United Nations reports that the escalated hostilities in Myanmar over the past month have resulted in the displacement of approximately 90,000 people.

“In view of the evolving security situation in Myanmar, all Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel. Those already living in Myanmar are advised to take precautions and avoid travel to the regions affected by violence. Inter-state travel by road should also be avoided,” the advisory said.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised the importance of Indian nationals in Myanmar registering with the Embassy of India in Yangon.
