Bigger, Better, Greener: New EV battery from Sweden to cut world’s dependency on China

In a significant development that can single-handedly end China’s stranglehold over the world’s supply of EV batteries, and free up the world’s energy and electric vehicle sectors, Northvolt, Sweden’s premier electric battery manufacturer, has unveiled a revolutionary sodium-ion battery.

Unlike conventional batteries, Northvolt’s breakthrough sodium-ion battery is not dependent on lithium, nickel, graphite, and cobalt, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.

With an impressive energy density exceeding 160 watt-hours per kilogram, the battery is initially designed for electricity storage plants but holds promise for future applications in electric vehicles, including two-wheeled scooters.

Patrik Andreasson, Northvolt’s Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Using sodium-ion technology is not new, but we think this is the first product ever completely free from critical raw materials. It is a fundamental breakthrough.”

He added that this innovation provides an alternative that is not reliant on specific regions, including China.

While Northvolt has not confirmed the location for mass production, the prototype battery, developed at the company’s labs in Vasteras, Sweden, is set to be showcased to customers in the coming year.

The move comes as European countries seek to establish homegrown electric battery industries to reduce dependency on external suppliers, particularly amid strained relations with China.

Storing electricity on an industrial scale through batteries is considered vital for the decarbonization of national electricity grids. As concerns mount over the dependence on China for critical minerals, battery manufacturers are actively diversifying supply chains and exploring alternative technologies.

Commenting on the potential impact, Andreasson stated, “When you think about energy security, it’s inconceivable to think about operating without leaders. The impact of creating jobs it can bring cannot be underestimated. You need to have local or regional champions.”

Northvolt, which produced its first lithium-ion battery cell in northern Sweden in late 2021, aims to enhance the energy density of its new battery while maintaining cost-effectiveness.

The company anticipates interest from markets in the Middle East, India, and Africa due to the battery’s safety features at high temperatures. While Northvolt is currently focused on its existing commitments, the prospect of expanding operations to the UK remains a consideration.
