CBI can’t challenge high court’s relief to me: Lalu Yadav on bail cancellation plea

On Monday, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Yadav filed an objection to the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) request to rescind bail granted to him in connection with the Doranda treasury case relating to the fodder scandal.

Lalu Yadav was granted bail in the case by the Jharkhand High Court on April 22, last year. A special CBI court in Ranchi convicted the 75-year-old RJD leader to five years in jail and fined him Rs 60 lakh for embezzling more than Rs 139 crore from the Doranda treasury.

Heavy rain alert in five Uttarakhand districts, Himachal today

The Indian Meteorological Department issued a 'orange alert' for severe to very heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from August 22-24, as well as a 'yellow alert' for heavy rain on August 21 (today) in both states.

Because of the constant rain, the hill states have suffered severe destruction and fatalities in recent months. The death toll in rain-related accidents in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand increased to 88 on Saturday, with another corpse discovered in the rubble of a collapsed temple in Shimla.

Centre has a plan to bring new criminal laws by year-end, say sources

According to sources, the country could get new criminal laws by the end of this year through the three bills that will replace the IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act, as the committee tasked with examining it is attempting to submit its report before the start of the Winter Session of the Parliament, which usually begins and ends in December. According to insiders, the administration would aim to have the laws enacted in parliament after discussions during the Winter Session.

On Friday, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar forwarded the three proposed legislation to replace the IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act to the Standing Committee on Home Affairs for review and ordered it to give its findings within three months.

The measures will be discussed in a meeting of the standing committee on August 24. According to sources, the sessions would be held often in order to accelerate the process. They suggested that daily meetings be explored at a later stage.

29 kg heroin seized, two Pak smugglers held along IB in Punjab's Ferozepur

According to an official, the BSF and the Punjab Police caught two Pakistani traffickers near the international border in Ferozepur on Monday and recovered 29 kilogrammes of heroin from them.

According to the official, one of the traffickers was injured by a bullet when Border Security Force (BSF) troops opened fire on them after detecting a danger.

They detected the movement of the Pakistani smugglers at 2:45 a.m. on Monday, according to a BSF official, who said that the BSF and the Punjab Police were conducting a combined operation on the banks of the Sutlej River near Gatti Matar village during the night between Sunday and Monday.

The smugglers were transporting 26 packages (29.26 kilogrammes) of heroin, according to the official. According to a BSF officer, the injured man has been hospitalised and is being treated for a gunshot wound in his hand.

Onions to be sold at Rs 25 per kg in Delhi

The cooperative NCCF will begin retail sale of onion from the government buffer stock at a discounted rate of 25 per kg in the national capital on Monday to relieve customers of exorbitant prices for the kitchen staple, according to its top official.

The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) is already selling tomatoes at a discounted cost on behalf of the national government, and it has now been authorised to trade buffer onion.

The government has set aside 3 lakh tonnes of onion for the fiscal year 2023-24. It has also decided to purchase an additional 2 lakh tonnes of onion this year as a buffer.

Delhi government official booked for raping minor

A Delhi government employee was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping his dead friend's underage daughter for several months.

The attack reportedly occurred between 2020 and 2021.

On August 13, the Burari Police Station filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the official under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the strict Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Following the death of her father, who was also a government official, the little girl began living with the accused in Burari from October 2020 until February 2021, according to authorities.

Margadarsi using ghost subscribers to siphon off money, says Andhra Pradesh CID

According to a police officer, the Andhra Pradesh Police CID has launched three FIRs against Margadarsi Chit Funds Pvt Ltd (MCFPL) for many alleged irregularities including using phantom subscribers to syphon off actual subscribers' money.

Margadarsi, according to N Sanjay, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), CID, was conducting chit membership without the knowledge of some persons and impersonating normal residents (ghost subscribers) to syphon off money.

"Large number of subscribers are turning up with complaints of non-payment of chit money and undue harassment for sureties which necessitated booking FIRs," said Sanjay addressing a press conference at AP police headquarters in Mangalagiri on Sunday.

17 bodies recovered from debris of Shiv Mandir in Shimla

According to an official, 17 dead have been discovered so far following the terrible landslide on 14 August in the Summer Hill area of Himachal Pradesh's rain-soaked Shimla district.

While speaking to ANI, Himachal Pradesh Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena stated that two bodies of a family have yet to be retrieved.

“One rescue operation is going on in the Shiv Mandir and so far 17 bodies have been recovered. Two bodies of a family of seven are still to be recovered. It seems that there are three more bodies. I had a word with the district authorities and I think they will be able to recover these bodies in another 2-3 days,” Mr Saxena said.

Gogi gang member arrested after exchange of fire in Delhi

A 27-year-old key member of the dreaded Gogi gang was detained on Sunday after an exchange of fire near Pushp Vihar in Delhi, police said.

According to the police, the accused is Sandeep, a native of Haryana's Sonipat, who is reportedly engaged in more than a dozen cases, including one for attempted murder, robbery, and extortion.

According to the authorities, the accused was injured in the right leg during the brief exchange of fire.

80% of decisions taken by CM Sarma-led cabinet implemented in Assam

Since Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took office, the Assam administration has executed more than 80 per cent of all decisions made by the state cabinet.

According to an official statement from the CM's office, Sarma has presided over 99 cabinet sessions and the state government has executed more than 80 per cent of the total decisions made by the state cabinet thus far.

According to the Assam administration, the state cabinet has made 779 decisions in 36 government ministries, and 625 of those choices have been executed so far, with another 154 cabinet decisions in the works.

The opposition parties gathered to devise a plan to present a unified front against the BJP in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

INDIA, or the ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance,’ is a coalition of 26 opposition parties that includes the Congress.

The parties have banded together to oppose PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and prevent it from securing a third consecutive term at the Centre in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The first such meeting was conducted on 23 June in Patna, Bihar, and the second from 17 July to 18 July in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
