Delhi Weather Update: Was It Really 52.3 Degrees In National Capital? Here’s What IMD Starts Says

New Delhi: In a shocking development, Delhi on Wednesday sweltered under an extreme heatwave as the maximum temperature in the national capital reached an alarming 52.3 degrees Celsius, but consequently, it raised alarms among weather enthusiasts as to how the temperatures could reach such high limits.

As a result of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) checked the temperature sensor located in the Mungeshpur area of the Delhi automatic weather station to see if the sensor was working properly or not, IMD Director General M Mohapatra said.

IMD Issues Clarifications

After the initial investigation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that the maximum temperature of over 52 degrees Celsius recorded in Delhi’s Mungeshpur on Wednesday was an “error in sensor or local factor.”

The IMD stated in an official release that it is examining the data and sensors.

“The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2 degree Celsius to 49.1 degrees Celsius in different parts of the city, Mungeshpur reported 52.9 degrees Celsius as an outlier compared to other stations. It could be due to an error in the sensor or a local factor. IMD is examining the data and sensors,” the release mentioned.

Delhi Continues To Reel Under Searing Heatwave

Delhi continues to toil under extreme heat as the national capital on Wednesday recorded a minimum temperature of 29.4 degrees Celsius, 2.8 notches above the seasons’ normal, the IMD said.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will prevail over most parts of Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its weather forecast warnings. The humidity level was 43 per cent at 8.30 am. The maximum temperature is likely to cross 46 degrees Celsius in many parts of the city.

On Tuesday, the national capital saw blistering heat as parts of Delhi singed, with temperatures soaring close to 50 degrees Celsius. Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in Delhi for the next few days, according to the IMD.

The weather department has urged people to take “extreme care for vulnerable people” due to the heatwave.

Due to the rising temperature, there is a very high likelihood of developing heat-related illness and heat stroke in people of all ages, and a significant health concern for vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases. The IMD has advised people to avoid exposure to heat and dehydration.
