Elon Musk Has Nothing But Contempt for This Popular Business Model

Tuesday was a big day for billionaire CEO Elon Musk.

Tesla  (TSLA) - Get Free Report held its annual shareholders meeting, where Musk teased two new products the EV-makers are developing, and just an hour later, sat down with CNBC for an in-depth, wide-ranging interview which he live-streamed on Twitter  (TWTR) - Get Free Report

Mentioning that Twitter is looking to hire people -- and, if they're "not too mad," rehire many of the people it let go during Musk's chaotic takeover of the social media platform -- he said that anyone who comes to work for him at any of his businesses will do so in person.

For Musk, the question of work from home, which became immensely popular during the pandemic, is not just an issue of productivity.

"You’re going to work from home, but the people that make your car, your food, fix your house, they can’t work from home, but you can," Musk said. "Does that seem morally right? Get off the godamn moral high horse with the working from home bullshit."

He added that the so-called "laptop class" is living in "la-la land," heavily criticizing the idea of working from home on the basis that many industries don't have the option.

The hour-long interview ranged through Twitter to artificial intelligence and Tesla.

"I think Tesla will have a ChatGPT moment, if not this year, then no later than next year," Musk said. "I have a sort of pathological optimism. Suddenly 3 million cars will be able to drive with no one. And then 5 million. And then 10 million."

He added that Tesla's AI systems are far more powerful than the popular AI makers, such as OpenAI, saying that he's unsure why more people aren't talking about it.

"If the positions were reversed and you said Tesla’s got to produce a large language model, or Microsoft OpenAI has to do self-driving," Musk said, "Tesla would win."
