EXCLUSIVE | Production designer John Paul Kelly on 'A Haunting In Venice': 'It's ridiculous a place like Venice exists'

John Paul Kelly, the production designer of the upcoming murder mystery A Haunting In Venice, spoke exclusively to Firstpost about his prep for the film, recreating the world of 1947 of Venice, and much more. Taking about it, Kelly said, “I went to Venice and realised very quickly we would need to build a palazzo, so we worked on that very quickly because there’s a time frame that needs to be followed to build the sets. We all did a lot of research together and I went away, came back, and had six weeks to design the sets that we built across various stages. We also constructed a miniature of the palazzo from the outside at 1/3rd scale.

When asked about what fascinated him the most about Venice, he said, “It’s extraordinary. When you see postcards, they say it was built 300 years ago, that’s what most of the people imagine but it has years of history. The influences that happen with the architecture are extraordinary, all the goods came from Asians across the world through Venice. I think the intricacies and complexities of the buildings were really fascinating as a designer and architect. It’s an impossible place, it’s ridiculous that it exists, and that’s what makes it a lot more exciting to spend your time at.”
