Expedia is Utilizing ChatGPT in an Unexpected Way

At least it's one less thing you have to worry about.

While everyone wants to go on vacation, the planning of one can be a complex process to say the least -- and the further from home you go, the more you have to think about in advance.

Do-it-all travel app Expedia  (EXPE) - Get Free Report may have a solution to save you some of that hassle. Starting Tuesday, April 4, English-speaking iOS users will be able to use ChatGPT to help travelers plan their trips.

The feature is currently in the beta testing phase, and there are plans to roll out the feature on Android next, though no time frame has been announced yet.

Travelers booking with Expedia will be able to ask questions about their trip, from finding flight details to places to stay. But the service is also geared toward helping users find things to do when they arrive at their destination. Think of it like an artificial intelligence travel agent.

“ChatGPT is a search tool—it’s a new way of thinking, a new way of searching, a new way of experiencing,” Expedia Group Inc. Chief Executive Peter Kern said in an interview according to the Wall Street Journal. “And we want to meet customers where they are.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time Expedia has used artificial intelligence technology. Like most app services, the company uses chatbots to provide customer service. The digital travel agency also uses AI to track flight prices.

All this sounds well and good, but critics of AI have pointed out the factual inconsistencies of chatbots. Like all AI, this tool should probably be used alongside manual research. One shudders to think of where you might end up if you wholly trust ChatGPT to plot every point of your next adventure.
