Gaza War: South Africa urges all nations to stop funding Israel’s military
South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor stated on Wednesday that all nations have a duty to cease endorsing and enabling Israel’s military operations in Gaza since the World Court has made it apparent that such acts may amount to genocide.
In a case brought by South Africa, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last week issued an order compelling Israel to do all within its power to stop its troops from committing genocide and to take action to improve the humanitarian plight of Palestinians in Gaza.
Refusing to call for a ceasefire, it declined to rule on the central question in South Africa’s case—that is, whether or not there has been genocide in Gaza. It can take years to make that decision.
South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, welcomed the International Court of Justice’s decision last week, calling it a step in the right direction and expressing confidence that Israel will follow it.
