IMD Weather Forecast: After heatwave conditions prevailing in many parts of the country, the IMD has provided some good news that the southwest monsoon is expected to enter the South Andaman Sea, parts of the Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar Islands by May 19. According to Meteorological Department Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the southwest monsoon is anticipated to arrive two to three days earlier. “This aligns with the near-normal onset date for the region, with Port Blair usually experiencing monsoon onset around May 20. Favourable conditions, including strengthening southwesterly winds and heightened rainfall activity, are expected to facilitate the monsoon’s advancement into the region by May 19.” The normal advancement date is around May 22.

Monsoon: Favourable Condition

The favourable conditions for monsoon includes – strengthening southwesterly winds and heightened rainfall activity. These conditions are likely to strengthen the monsoon.

According to weather department Southwest monsoon to advance towards Andaman Sea, Nicobar islands and southeast Bay of Bengal by May 19, with favourable conditions. The onset of the monsoon is predicted earlier, impacting regions like Kerala based on specific criteria.

Monsoon:  Impact

The IMD has forecasted that mild to moderate rain is expected over the next couple of days, which is likely to help regulate the sweltering daytime temperatures. There’s a possibility of humidity levels reaching up to 85% as a result of these showers. Independent weather tracking agencies are foreseeing an escalation in rainfall intensity especially in the interior parts.

It seems that an atmospheric trough is to be credited for these showers and potentially, thunderstorms. Meanwhile, Rajasthan has already experienced both rain and thunderstorms brought about by the influence of a western disturbance, resulting in a downward shift in their highest temperatures. Devgarh and Rajsamand have seen the most rainfall. The weather forecasts suggest continuation of such thunderstorm activities at least till May 14. There are also warnings about a hefty dust storm that could hit the state’s capital.
