He defeated sitting Congress MLA Kanti Sodha Parmar in Anand, known for the world famous Amul dairy brand.

The Congress and the BJP were locked in a neck-and-neck fight in initial rounds of counting, but in the end the saffron outfit emerged victorious with a comfortable vote gap.

In 2017, the Opposition Congress had clinched the seat after a gap of 25 years. Parmar had bagged the Assembly segment five years ago by a little over 5,000 votes after three failed attempts.

The Seventh Wave: BJP breaks all records in Gujarat as Kejriwal'l' debris buries Congress

Surprises won’t cease. Like the Bharatiya Janata Party, whose victory march shows no sign of pause. In an election that many forecast would see Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party snatch the Gujarat crown from the head of the saffron outfit or at least stun it, Modi power has prevailed again.

And how. Everything has crumbled under the Bharatiya Janata juggernaut: the new Opposition, the old Opposition, the cliched themes of anti-incumbency and voter apathy, it’s all gone, wiped out.

Gujarat, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state and the one place his opponents would love to see him fall, is in seventh saffron heaven with the highest seat count yet for the BJP. If Gujarat was where Modi would be checked in the run to the big fight of 2024, it didn’t happen.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have broken ground in another state where they were hitherto non-existent. These are the most obvious takeaways of the Gujarat Assembly polls 2022.

But this Gujarat election must also be considered to extrapolate the trajectory of Indian politics in the coming future.

AAP's CM face Isudan Gadhvi loses to BJP rival after leading in initial rounds

Isudan Gadhvi, the Aam Aadmi Party's CM face in Gujarat, lost in the Assembly election from Khambhalia on Thursday by more than 18,000 votes as his BJP rival came back from behind to clinch the seat.

Gadhvi was leading at the end of the fourth round over Congress's incumbent MLA Vikram Madam, while the BJP's Mulubhai Bera was trailing in the third place.

But Bera surpassed his rivals in the later rounds of vote counting.

Khambhalia emerged as one of the high-profile seats in the Gujarat Assembly elections after the AAP fielded Gadhvi, its CM face, from this constituency in the Saurashtra region.

A former TV news anchor, Gadhvi was born and brought up in Khambhalia. But social equations in this Ahir-dominated seat probably did not favour him as his own Gadhvi community is numerically not significant in the area.

Gujarat 2022 seals India’s 2024 fate: Rahul’s dynastic Congress just can’t take on Modi’s meritocratic BJP

In his 2016 book, Democrats and Dissenters, historian Ramachandra Guha wrote that the Gandhis must quit politics for the good of the Congress, if not the nation. Coming out scathingly against Rahul Gandhi, he asserted that he “has neither energy, nor the heart, nor the brains… to be an effective political leader”. Guha continued, “For the Congress’ long-term future, therefore, it may be in its own best interests to open its top leadership to a wider talent pool.”

As the Congress delivers one of its worst electoral performances in Gujarat, struggling to win even 25 seats in the state where it had given a spirited fightback in the 2017 Assembly polls by getting 77 seats to the BJP’s 99, Guha seems to be vindicated again. Not just the victory — the BJP has made the habit of bucking the anti-incumbency trend in Gujarat, seventh time in a row — but the manner in which it has been achieved by the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah combine makes one write an obituary for the grand old party.
