Heeramandi 2: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Confirms Sequel, Says ‘Dancing, Singing Will Continue After Partition’

Heeramandi 2: Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, opened to mixed reviews on Netflix on May 1. Although many people appreciated the series’ larger-than-life cast, others had issues with certain of the performers’ performances. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has changed his mind on Heeramandi 2, despite his earlier comments that ‘web series like this can happen only once, nobody can make it again, not even me.’ In a recent interview with an international publication, the director revealed that the historical drama series would be renewed for a second season.

Speaking to Variety, Bhansali said, “It takes a lot to make a series. This one has taken a lot. After ‘Gangubai’ (‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’) released in February 2022, from that to now every single day I have worked without a break. So the responsibility is huge on the series.”

The filmmaker went on to explain the narrative of the sequel to the historic drama. Women move out of Lahore after partition to settle in Mumbai and Kolkata. “In ‘Heeramandi 2,’ the women now come from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settle in the Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains the same. They still have to dance and sing, but this time for the producers and not for the nawabs. So that’s the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes,” Bhansali added.

Netflix also dropped a special video post to announce the second season of Heeramandi. A flash mob of 100 dancers, dressed in vibrant Anarkalis and ghungroo at Carter Road in Mumbai. The caption on the post read, “Mehfil phir se jamegi, Heeramandi: Season 2 jo aayega, ” with a flower and sparkle emoji.

About Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar

The first season took place in the homeland of tawaifs in the Heeramandi region of Lahore, British India. The opulent narrative takes place between 1920 and 1947 when the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan. The tawaifs received music and dance training and were courted by nobles. The narrative surrounds Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the wily queen of Heeramandi, and her resentful niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who aspires to succeed her aunt.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s show also starred Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sharmin Segal in significant roles. The men who stole the show were Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Taha Shah Badussha and Ayadhyan Suman.

The series became the most watched Indian series on Netflix internationally within the first week of its May 1 premiere, dancing its way up the non-English TV worldwide list in 43 countries. Since its debut, the series has held the top slot on the India Top 10 list.
