STAT ATTACK

England’s ODI numbers since 2019 (before the ongoing World Cup):

Matches: 42

Won: 22

Lost: 16

No Result: 4

England’s win-loss ratio since their 2019 World Cup title stands at 1.375. Only Sri Lanka (1.250) and Australia (1.200) have a lower win-loss ratio than England among the full members

England's World Cup campaign

England desperately need to fire collectively if they are to win today. They were in equally challenging position at the T20 World Cup last year and went on win the whole thing. Granted they are in a worse position now considering even if they win the remaining four matches, it won't be enough. But it would be good to save face after a dreadful campaign

Pitch report

It will be interesting to see how the pitch plays out. Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour have taken a look. Jasprit Bumrah has marked his run up. For England, Wiley and Woakes have done the same.

India and their brilliant campaign

For the Men in Blue, things have gone on swimmingly. Rohit Sharma has been sublime at the top and provided launchpad for the team to capitalise on. Virat Kohli has struck runs with ease including three fifties and a century. Mohammed Shami stepped in for an injured Hardik Pandya to take five wickets. Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja all look very good with the ball. Question, though, is how they fare when batting first. South Africa had been incredible when batting first and struggled when chasing. The same question mark persists over India. Let's see what the toss holds in another half hour

Should Ashwin come in?

Aakash Chopra thinks Ashwin should come in. But it would mean a choice in the pace bowling department. And the former India player has a pick.

"There has been talk that R Ashwin may feature in the game against England because the ground is huge and the pitch was also receptive to turn during the last IPL. During the IPL, there were two types of pitches in Lucknow. One made of black soil and the other from red soil. And, whenever there were games on the black soil pitch, one saw massive turn for spinners. But, on the pitch that had red soil, batting was relatively easy. Even during the month of April and May dew was a factor. As of now they have a surface consisting of red soil and the pitch is largely true with average turn.”

“So, if India play Ashwin, they will increase their batting depth but will be left with spots for only two pace bowlers. So that’s the big question. Will India want to play with only two pacers? In case they want to play Ashwin, then Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami would be my choice of pacers,” he added.

India vs England Head-to-Head

India and England have faced off 106 times in ODIs with India winning 57, England 44. Three matches ended without a result and two in ties.

They have met eight times in World Cup matches with England winning four, India three. One was a tie (in the 2011 World Cup). Both teams had posted 338 runs on that day in Bengaluru

India vs England LIVE

India take on England in Match 29 of the Cricket World Cup at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The two teams are at different positions in their campaign: India have played five, won five. England, meanwhile, have played five, won one to sit bottom of the points table. The defending champions are in a terrible position and face an early exit.

India vs England LIVE: India and England have played contrast cricket at the World Cup and have had contrast results as well. That may not change when they square off at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in Lucknow.

India are one win away from booking a place in the semi-finals, with six wins in six, while England are desperately seeking survival. A defeat today and they will be out of reckoning for the last-four.

England’s boom or bust approach paid dividends with them clinching the ODI World Cup in 2019 and T20 World Cup last year but that has not worked in Indian conditions.

With India all but assured of a place in the next stage of the tournament, it is an opportunity for Rohit Sharma’s side to give some players a chance. R Ashwin could come in with Hardik Pandya set to miss a second match running. If he plays, one seamer would have to be dropped which would ideally be between Mohammad Siraj and Mohammed Shami.
