India vs Netherlands: Kohli breaking Tendulkar's record and other milestones that can be achieved

India gear up for one last challenge in the group stage of the 2023 ICC World Cup before shifting their focus to the big semi-final against New Zealand next week. The Men in Blue, who are the only remaining undefeated team in the ongoing tournament with eight wins in as many outings, face Netherlands in what will be the final match of the tournament before the knockouts get underway.

It would be understandable for the Men in Blue to be not as fired up for the match that takes place at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday given they were the first to confirm their place in the semi-finals and are now guaranteed a place at the top of the table at the end of the league stage.

Captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, however, would still want their team to get some valuable game time ahead of the showdown against the Black Caps, and possibly make a change or two to their lineup to give some of the regular members a break and bring in a bench-warmer or two.

The 45th match of the World Cup could also bear witness to records being broken and milestones being achieved. We take a look at that in greater detail below:

— Virat Kohli could break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record for most centuries in One-Day Internationals. Kohli had equalled Tendulkar’s magical feat of 49 ODI tons with an unbeaten 101 against South Africa at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Sunday. A week later against the Dutchman, he will hope to hit a half-century of centuries in the 50-over format in which he has already established himself as one of the all-time greats.

— India will stretch their winning streak to nine matches should they defeat the Netherlands on Sunday. That will make it their second-longest winning run at ICC’s showpiece event. India had won 11 consecutive games under MS Dhoni’s leadership across the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, and eight in the 2003 World Cup.

— Mohammed Shami is three wickets short of becoming the first Indian bowler to complete 50 wickets in ICC World Cups. Shami is India’s leading wicket-taker in the ongoing tournament with 16 wickets and has already gone past Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath (44) in the list of bowlers with the most wickets in World Cup history.

— The Netherlands have never defeated India in any format to date and will be hoping to register their maiden victory against the Men in Blue to bow out of the tournament in style. India defeated the Dutch by 68 runs and by 5 wickets in their ICC World Cup meetings in 2003 and 2011 respectively. Their only 20-over meeting came in last year’s T20 World Cup in Sydney, which the Indians won by 56 runs.
