India vs New Zealand: How India keep tripping in ICC event knockout matches since 2013 Champions Trophy

Since 2013, Team India has not been able to cross the hurdle of a knockout match in ICC tournaments. They have been stuck in a recurring narrative of knockout stage exits, and do not have any silverware to show for their efforts. The latest disappointment came when the side went down to Australia in the World Test Championship final at the Oval earlier this year.

Before this loss, India suffered a painful ten-wicket defeat against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final at the Adelaide Oval on November 10. This ended their journey in the T20 World Cup tournament held in Australia.

IND vs NZ: A chance for India to wipe away unhappy memories

The saga of tripping in key knockout matches started in the 2014 T20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium. This match was dominated by Sri Lanka when they won the final by six wickets and brushed India aside.

In the ODI World Cup 2015 in Australia, India’s hopes were dashed once again in the semi-finals against the hosts after the Australian batters blazed away to a 300+ total and their bowlers never allowed India to break free.

The 2016 T20 World Cup in India had a different twist as Virat Kohli’s outstanding innings led the team to a formidable 192 in the semi-final, but then, it was never enough against a star-studded West Indies side, who ultimately went on to clinch the trophy.

IND vs NZ: India’s poor record against New Zealand in ICC tournaments

The 2017 Champions Trophy saw India take on Pakistan. India had already beaten Pakistan in the league stage, but they were slammed by a Fakhar Zaman-ton in the final and could never recover in the chase.

The wait continued – this time in the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England, where India dominated the league stage, but come the semi-final clash against New Zealand, the top order faltered once again.

IND vs New Zealand: All you need to know

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to minimal international matches, and the ICC World Test Championship final in 2021 saw India’s two years of hard work in the longer format crumble once again as New Zealand outplayed them in Southampton.

The rescheduled 2020 T20 World Cup in 2021, held in the UAE, saw India exiting in the group stage after crushing losses to Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games.

India’s poor record in ICC knockouts since 2013 Champions Trophy win:

2014: India lose to Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in T20 World Cup final
2015: India lose to Australia by 95 runs in ODI World Cup semi-final
2016: India lose to West Indies by seven wickets in T20 World Cup semi-final
2017: India lose to Pakistan by 180 runs in Champions Trophy final
2019: India lose to New Zealand by 18 runs in ODI World Cup semi-final
2021: India lose to New Zeland by eight wickets in World Test Championship final
2022: India lose to England by 10 wickets in T20 World Cup semi-final
2023: India lose to Australia by 209 runs in World Test Championship final
