India vs Pakistan: From Kohli's century in 2015 to Kumble's 10-wicket haul, top moments from past matches across formats

Excitement is in the air as Team India are set to lock horns against Pakistan in the 2023 World Cup clash in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Both teams will be coming off two wins off as many matches in the tournament so far. India might be favourites coming into the match, but if Mohammad Rizwan’s heroics against Sri Lanka are to be considered, Pakistan cannot be taken lightly.

Ahead of a new chapter of one of the most storied rivalries in Indian cricket, let’s now take a look at some memorable moments from past matches, across all formats:

Virat Kohli’s match-winning century in the 2015 World Cup

In the 2015 ODI World Cup clash in Adelaide, India had clinched a dominant 76-run win over Pakistan. Virat Kohli (107) played a pivotal role in that match, scoring a century to take India to 300/7.

In reply, Mohammed Shami took four wickets as Pakistan were bundled out for just 224 in 47 overs.

10-wicket haul by Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble’s 10-wicket haul in a single innings against Pakistan, during the second Test against Pakistan in Delhi is what will come to mind of many cricket fans.

After having taken a four-fer in the first innings to dismiss Pakistan to 172, in the second innings, Kumble had become only the second bowler, and the first Indian to take all 10 wickets in a Test innings. He finished with figures of 10/74 in the second innings.

2007 ICC T20 World Cup Final

India met Pakistan in the final of the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup, emerging victorious in a thrilling and nail-biting match. The game is particularly remembered for Gautam Gambhir’s match-winning 75 and Rohit Sharma’s crucial six in the final over.

India posted 157/5 from 20 overs after having elected to bat first. In Pakistan’s reply, the Men in Green needed 13 runs to win off the final over with just one wicket in hand, and it was a magical over from Joginder Sharma who turned things around.

After starting off with a wide and a dot ball, Misbah ul Haq slammed six in the second delivery to give Pakistan some hope.

In the third ball, Misbah went for the scoop shot over short fine leg, but ended up finding Sreeshanth with the catch.

India eventually clinched the inaugural World T20 trophy, beating Pakistan by five runs.

1992 Cricket World Cup

In the 1992 Cricket World Cup, India triumphed against Pakistan with Sachin Tendulkar’s memorable 54 and Ajay Jadeja’s opening 46 runs.

The match was reduced to 49 overs due to a slow over-rate by Pakistan. India had won the toss and opted to bat, with Sachin Tendulkar (54*) and Ajay Jadeja (46) taking the Men in Blue to 216/7.

In reply, it was a collective effort from the bowlers that helped India see off Pakistan for 173. Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and Manoj Prabhakar took two wickets each, while Sachin Tendulkar and Venkatapathy Raju collected one wicket each.

2003 ICC Cricket World Cup clash

The 2003 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Centurion will be remembered for Sachin Tendulkar’s knock of 98.

After Pakistan scored 273/7 on the back of a century from Saeed Anwar, Tendulkar scored 98 runs off 75 deliveries, which included 12 fours and a six to help India chase down the total with six wickets to spare.

Rahul Dravid, current India head coach, and Yuvraj Singh, were involved in a 99-run stand for the fifth wicket to take India home.
