IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange and Purple Cap list: RCB move to fifth spot after beat PBKS

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) jumped to the fifth spot on the IPL 2023 points table after defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 24 runs in Mohali on Thursday.

Bangalore collected their third win of the 16th season — and their first away from home — after an all-round performance against Punjab at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. RCB rode on half-centuries from Faf du Plessis (84) and stand-in skipper Virat Kohli (59) to post a competitive 174/4 on the board before Mohammed Siraj (4/21) produced his best-ever performance in the IPL to bowl PBKS out for 150.

As a result of their third defeat in as many games, Punjab slid to the seventh spot on the points table. They would drop another spot to eighth should Kolkata Knight Riders defeat Delhi Capitals later on Thursday.

Given their excellent Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.320, Kolkata can potentially jump to the third spot should they defeat Delhi in the second match of the Thursday double-header at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. DC, however, will remain at the bottom of the table even if they end up collecting their first win of the season after five consecutive defeats.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Wednesday completed a remarkable 10-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Match 26 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Jaipur, to go eight points from six matches.

The Royals, also with eight points, remained on top of the IPL standings despite the defeat, with LSG also on the same points. Only a better NRR for the Royals (+1.043) separate them from the Super Giants (+0.709).

Here’s a look at the updated IPL 2023 points table after RR vs LSG:

Position Team Matches Won Lost NR Net RR Points
1 RR 6 4 2 0 +1.043 8

List of Orange Cap and Purple Cap holders

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf du Plessis consolidated himself at the top of the batting chart after smashing a 56-ball 84 against Punjab Kings on Thursday, taking his season run tally to 343. Virat Kohli, who filled in for du Plessis as skipper for the Punjab away game, jumped to the second spot after his knock of 59 in the same innings, taking his tally to 279. Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler (244) currently occupies the third spot.

A Royal Challengers Bangalore player also occupies the top spot in the bowling charts with Mohammed Siraj jumping to the top spot following his IPL-best haul of 4/21 against Punjab Kings, taking his tally to 12 in six games. Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mark Wood and Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal occupy the second and third spots, both having collected 11 wickets so far though the former has played two games fewer.
