Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) rose to the fifth spot on the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) points table after defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven runs in Bengaluru, while Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched a dominant 49-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second game to go atop the standings with 10 points.

It was Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis’s explosive 127-run third-wicket partnership that played a key role guiding Bangalore, who were donning green kits for a change, to a competitive 189/9 after being invited to bat.

Rajasthan, in reply, looked well set at one stage during their chase during Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal’s partnership, but lost wickets in at regular intervals towards the end to fall marginally short of the target.

In the second match, fifties from Devon Conway (56), Shivam Dube (50) and Ajinkya Rahane (71*) took CSK to 235/4 from 20 overs, the highest-ever T20 score atEden Gardens.

In reply, Jason Roy and Rinku Singh scored fifties but the other battersfailed to convert starts, and eventually KKR fell well short in the end, being restricted to 186/8.

Five teams are tied on eight points after the KKR-CSK match in Kolkata, with Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans currently occupying the playoff spots.

List of Orange Cap and Purple Cap holders

RCB’s Faf du Plessis became the first batter to cross the 400-run mark during his 39-ball 62 against RR on Sunday, sitting firmly at the top with 405 runs after collecting his fifth half-century of the season. Later on Sunday, CSK opener Devon Conway brought up his fourth half-century on the trot to move to the second spot with 314 runs. Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner is third on the list with 285 runs.

RCB pacer Mohammed Siraj, meanwhile, was back on top of the Purple Cap list after dismissing Jos Buttler in the very first over of the RR innings. Buttler’s dismissal took his season tally to 13, level with PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh with Siraj having the better average and economy. RR leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is third on the list with 12 wickets.
