Israel and Hamas extend their truce, but it seems only a matter of time before the war resumes

On Tuesday, an Israeli-Hamas truce reached its fifth day, with the extremist organisation vowing to free additional civilian captives to postpone the expected start of the battle and Israel under increasing pressure to spare Palestinian civilians if violence returns.

The parties agreed to prolong their truce until Wednesday, with two further swaps of militant-held captives for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel scheduled. However, Israel has consistently stated that it will continue the war with "full force" to destroy Hamas once it is evident that no more hostages will be released under the conditions of the existing truce.
