Israel-Hamas War: Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid write open letter to U.S. president Joe Biden urging for ceasefire in Gaza

Amid the crisis in Israel after Hamas’ attack, many celebrities from India and across the globe have expressed their concern and outrage. Going a step ahead, as many as 55 Hollywood personalities signed an open letter to the U.S. president Joe Biden calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza last month.

The names included the likes of Andrew Garfield, Kristen Stewart, Oscar Isaac, Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Cate Blanchett, Hasan Minhaj, Jeremy Strong and Joaquin Phoenix.

Two more names have joined the list- Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez.

What does the open letter read?

“We ask that, as President of the United States, you call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost,” it reads. “More than 5,000 people have been killed in the last week and a half – a number any person of conscience knows is catastrophic. We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.”

The letter was put out by Artists 4 Ceasefire Organization.

The open letter added, “Beyond our pain and mourning for all of the people there and their loved ones around the world we are motivated by an unbending will to stand for our common humanity. We stand for freedom, justice, dignity and peace for all people – and a deep desire to stop more bloodshed. We refuse to tell future generations the story of our silence, that we stood by and did nothing.”

Selena Gomez slammed by social media

While condemning the violence amid the Israel-Hamas war, she revealed the reason behind her silence for so long.

Reiterating that her post will not make any difference, Selena said, “I’ve been taking a break from social media because my heart breaks to see all of the horror, hate, violence, and terror that’s going on in the world. People being tortured and killed or any act of hate towards any one group is horrific. We need to protect ALL people, especially children, and stop the violence for good.”

A fan wrote, “So you posting to your 400+ million (followers) won’t change anything?! Unless it’s for causes that you care about.”

Another questioned, “How did she manage to find a way to make herself the victim here?”

Meanwhile, a third commented, “ A whole bunch of nothing for her 430 million followers…”

Besides Selena, many other Hollywood celebrities came out to express their views on the current situation in Israel. These celebrities include Natalie Portman, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Gal Gadot, Madonna, Barbara Streisand, Selma Blair, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Bieber, Gigi Hadid, U2, Kim Kardashian and Jessica Seinfeld.
